10:45 AM Nica Gazette
A real mouthful of a home made beefburger. Situated just off the main promenade and having chosen the healthier option for lunch, time to gorge on a succulent beef burger. The burger was definitely big, a bit too big, and I couldn't seem to hold it all together! However the meat was tasty and succulent. The accompanied side was Dave's own, home cut potato fries...yum. The place i felt was reasonably decorated, however, it's main function was that of a bar, and not as an all out restaurant, so it was again a shot in the dark. The place was clean, service was quick although the bill was pricey, although, inline with the notion of tourist town tourist prices! Finally word of warning..Dave's homemade hot sauce is HOT HOT HOT!! Service:...

Nicaragua's cuisine has a very interesting background. When the Spanish came, they found out that the Creole had a cooking culture already, had interesting dishes of their own, and had learned to prepare corn in almost any way one can think of. Creoles and Garifunas had been living there long enough as to have a very rich cooking tradition. Later on it mixed with the Spanish cuisine, making thus a very interesting product. Nicaraguans eat some dishes that to other countries may seem strange, as they eat turtle eggs, boas, and some other species going to extinction. They also prepare from the cow almost all parts of it, including brains, bull's testicles, skin and even the blood. But after a foreigner tries these dishes out, he will be amazed...

Some of Nicaragua's finest coffee producers left for Miami during the political instability of the late 1970s. Coffee production has recovered somewhat but the country is still dealing with the legacy and aftermath of political and economic reforms. Most Nicaraguan coffee is used for blends. There are a few notable coffees and they come from the Matagalpa, Jinotega and Nuevo Segovia regions. The best Nicaraguan coffees are classified as Central Estrictamente Altura. These coffees are known for their fragrance and acidity. For those who love Fair Trade coffee, you should look for Proodecoop Goup sold at specialty coffee shops. Proodecoop is a single origin coffee that produces very high coffees with strict adherence to Fair Trade schemes. The...

Nacatamales are great. I think far better than the Costa Rican tamales. You usually can get them only on the weekends. And aside from people's homes (you'll see cardboard signs with "Se Vende Nacatamales), you can often find vendors in the markets. She's not 100% correct as you can get nacatamales in some cafes and restaurant (but they usually get them from someone's hom...

It's the morning after the night before..and the head hurts! Decided I needed a an old English hangover cure: a big fry up! But where to go in Granada? The Nica Buffet was recommended to me, I was told that it might have been closed down, but when I got there it was well and truly open. Tucked in between Calle Vega and Calle Atravesada, (around the corner from the Managua bus terminal), I was greeted with a buzz of activity. I managed to get a small table by the door, as the cafe seemed to be doing a nice early morning risers trade! The owner introduced himself as Eddie, an expat from Holland, who has been living in Granada for close on 11 years now and running the Nica Buffet for many years now. The menu was a simple design, yet catered...

When choosing a place to dine and settle that constant stomach grumbling for food. Certain considerations need to take place. Firstly, appearance, all to often, a run down paint-flaked restaurant can be the first and last impression that is left instilled in one’s thoughts. If it’s too run down despite what could still be great quality food, you can straight away loose the appetite. Appearance, is followed by ambiance, quality, service and value. If all these criteria are met, then the success of your cafe, restaurant or hotel can be a very positive experience. Attention restaurant owners: this is how we will consistently and persistently judge your establishment. Well, let this be an example to us all. Last week, while in Granada, when...
