CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — President Hugo Chavez ordered thousands of National Guard soldiers into the streets of Venezuela's capital and surrounding states Thursday, urging them to help outgunned police curb widespread violent crime.
"We've been fighting and reducing overall crime rates, but we've fallen short when it comes to the number of homicides," Chavez told National Guard troops holding assault rifles as they stood in formation at a downtown plaza.
More than 3,200 troops were deployed to the streets of Caracas as well as the surrounding states of Miranda and Vargas, according to Gen. Miguel Vivas Landino, commander of the new security force.
Venezuela has one of Latin America's highest murder rates. The government has not released official statistics tallying annual killings for several years, but statistics released by human rights groups and academic organizations indicate Venezuela has become one of the most dangerous countries in Latin America.
From 1998 through 2010, the yearly homicide rate tripled, rising from 19 for every 100,000 residents in the South American nation to 57 per 100,000, according to the Venezuelan Violence Observatory, a Caracas-based academic organization that closely tracks crime statistics and trends.
Other violent crimes such as kidnapping and armed robbery have also increased in recent years in Venezuela.
As ransom kidnappings have soared, the government passed a revised law in 2009 that stiffened prison sentences for kidnapping and also allows authorities to freeze the banks accounts of victims' families to prevent them from paying ransom.
Kidnappings have soared over the last decade, the Venezuelan Violence Observatory says. Reports of kidnappings increased from 52 in 1998 to 618 in 2009, when the organization last compiled complete statistics.
Last week, professional baseball player Wilson Ramos was seized at gunpoint outside his family's home in the city of Valencia. The Washington Nationals catcher was rescued by police commandos two days later at a remote hideout in the mountains of central Carabobo state.
His kidnapping captured the attention of many Venezuelans, but few were surprised that one of the country's major league players had become a crime victim because the problem is now so widespread that it affects citizens of all social classes.
Rising crime is among the problems that have weakened Chavez's standing with his countrymen, although he remains the country's most popular politician heading into next year's presidential election.
During Thursday's speech, Chavez turned to politics by warning the massed soldiers that his opponents are preparing to cause chaos and upheaval ahead of the election.
He said the foes of his socialist-oriented government know they cannot win at the polls, so they hope to cause disorder in the streets and then blame government supporters for the chaos and denounce alleged voter fraud to smear his election triumph.
Chavez provided no proof to support his allegations, and he has made similar charges in the past without offering evidence.
Opposition leaders have repeatedly said they plan to unseat Chavez through the ballot box — not by violent or unconstitutional means.

CARACAS, Venezuela – Allies and adversaries of President Hugo Chavez took to the streets of the capital by the thousands Sunday, staging rival demonstrations to commemorate the 53rd anniversary ofVenezuela's democracy.
Opposition supporters gathered along an avenue in eastern Caracas and chanted anti-government slogans while waving red-yellow-and-blue Venezuelan flags and banners labeling Chavez a despot. Many of the president's critics expressed concerns that Chavez is amassing power and cracking down on dissent.
"In a country where dissidence is constantly attacked, there's no true democracy," said Virginia Zamora, who helped organize the anti-Chavez rally.
Chavez's supporters staged their own demonstration to defend their leader, disputing claims that the former paratrooper popularly known as "El Comandante" is becoming increasingly authoritarian as he attempts to steer this politically divided South American country toward socialism.
"Chavez has demonstrated again and again that he's a democrat. It's absurd that some think he's a dictator," said Alejandra Gonzalez, a single mother who supports Chavez for opening state-run markets that sell food at cut-rate prices and sending Cuban doctors into the slums to help the poor.
Gonzalez, who gathered outside the presidential palace with thousands of other government backers to listen to a speech by Chavez, scoffed at claims that her favorite politician is trampling democratic rights or intends to follow the example of communist Cuba's former leader, Fidel Castro, a mentor who has become one of Chavez's closest foreign allies.
Chavez proudly noted that he and his allies have repeatedly defeated opposition candidates at the polls for more than a decade.
"They accuse me of being a dictator," he said. "They must be crazy."
Chavez said he hopes to win re-election in 2012 and govern until 2019, when he would turn 65 years old.
"I'd be an old man," Chavez told the crowd.
Jan. 23 is the anniversary of the overthrow of Gen. Marcos Perez Jimenez, Venezuela's last dictator. Since Chavez took office in 1999, it has become a date that underscores Venezuela's political divisions.
Some government opponents have likened Chavez to Perez Jimenez, saying that both attempted to silence the news media, used the judiciary to jail adversaries and violated basic freedoms such as protest rights.
"The big lesson from Jan. 23 is that we must fight for democracy and freedom every day," said opposition lawmaker Maria Corina Machado.
Most Venezuelans condemn Perez Jimenez's rule, but some elders praise him as an effective administrator and leader who diligently maintained public order while modernizing the South American country with major highways, bridges and urban residential complexes.
Anti-Chavez protests also took place in several cities abroad, including Miami, Madrid and Bogota, Colombia.
"Democracy was lost in Venezuela a long time ago," said Marcos Ferreyra, a former Venezuelan soldier who demonstrated along with 300 others in Miami.
The McRib is back
NEW YORK (AP) -- The McRib, the elusive sandwich that has inspired a cult-like following, is back.
McDonald's Corp. announced Monday that the boneless barbecue pork sandwich, usually available in only a few stores at a time, will be sold at all U.S. locations through Nov. 14.
Most of the time, it's up to local franchises to determine when and if they want to sell the McRib -- except in Germany, the only place where it's available perennially. But McDonald's said the response was so great last November when it made the McRib available nationally for about three weeks that it decided to bring it back this year. The company, which previously hadn't sold the McRib nationally since 1994, declined to give specific sales numbers.
The sandwich, which is dressed with onions, pickle slices and barbecue sauce, was introduced nationally in 1982. With 500 calories and 26 grams of fat, it's slightly trimmer than the Big Mac, which has 540 calories and 29 grams of fat. And just like the Big Mac, the McRib has become a popular McDonald's offering.
There are Facebook groups like "Bring Back the McRib!!!" There are Twitter tags, where posts range from "Lucky me, the McRib is back" to "If you eat McRibs, you need to re-evaluate what it is you actually want in life." Last year, the guy who won McDonald's $1 million Monopoly game grand prize was ordering -- you guessed it -- a McRib. Earlier this month, former Playmate Jenny McCarthy contacted the McRib Locator website for help finding a McRib in southern California: She got one in Fountain Valley.
The website's creator, Alan Klein, said he suspected something was up when traffic exploded from about 150 hits a day to about 4,000 in the past week or so, as more fans reported sightings. People are sending him photos of their McRib variations: the McRib with lettuce and tomato, the McRib with bacon, three McRibs stacked on top of each other.
Klein, a meteorologist in the Minneapolis area, runs the website in his spare time with help from his wife, Kimberly. He created the Locator in 2008 because he wanted to learn how to use the Google Maps program for work, and because he had fond memories of eating the pork sandwich while growing up on a hog farm.
"We've been spoiled this year and last year with it being around nationwide," he said. "But I hope it stays elusive because otherwise nobody will come to our website."
If the McRib is so popular, why not just offer it all the time? McDonald's likes to stoke the enthusiasm with an aura of transience.
"Bringing it back every so often adds to the excitement," said Marta Fearon, McDonald's U.S. marketing director, who added that she's not sure if the McRib will reappear in stores every fall.
And how can it be called a McRib if it doesn't have any bones? Said Fearon: "That gives it this quirky sense of humor."

Gilad Schalit Looks Like He Just Was Released From A Concentration Camp
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli officials harshly criticized an Egyptian television interview with soldier Gilad Schalit minutes after Hamas militants freed him in a prisoner swap Tuesday, saying the questioning was inappropriate and insensitive.
In the interview aired on Egyptian state television, a gaunt, sallow and uncomfortable looking Schalit appeared to struggle to speak at times, and his breathing was noticeably labored as he awkwardly answered questions. The footage, along with earlier Egyptian TV video showing Schalit being transferred to Egypt, were the first images seen of the soldier after more than five years in Hamas captivity.
Armed Hamas militants were in the area during the interview. One of them stood behind Schalit's chair, wearing a a black face mask, a green headband of the Qassam brigades — Hamas' military wing — and a video camera in his hand.
"You have known what it is like to be in captivity," the interviewer Shahira Amin said to Schalit. "There are more than 5,000 Palestinians in Israeli jails. Will you help campaign for their release?" she asked.
"What has the experience brought you? Has it made you stronger?" she asked at another point. And, brushing aside the fact Hamas had barred anyone from visiting Schalit, she asked him why he only gave one interview while held captive.
An Israeli official questioned the ethics of the journalists involved.
"We are all shocked that a so-called interview was forced on (Schalit) before he could even talk to his family or set foot on Israeli soil," the official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was discussing a sensitive diplomatic matter, but said the sentiment was widely shared in official Israeli ranks.
Israeli security officials told Israeli YNet News that the interview was a violation of the deal for Schalit's release.
However, an Egyptian security official said the Egyptian information minister asked the intelligence chief for an exclusive interview with Schalit. According to the official, Israel allowed only one cameraman from Egyptian TV to film inside the tent where Egyptian and Israeli intelligence officials were meeting with Schalit. It was not a condition in the deal but a request from Egypt. The interviewer said it was not coerced.
An ashen-faced Schalit answered a range of questions on his captivity and what he thought of the 1,027 Palestinian prisoners released for his freedom.
He was then handed over to Israeli officials and only then given a medical examination, where doctors determined he showed signs of malnutrition and lack of exposure to sunlight.
He called his family shortly afterwards.
Israeli media discussed the interview at length, with commentators calling it insensitive.
Channel 10 commentator and presenter Raviv Drucker said her questions would "likely win the title of the stupidest questions of the past 100 years."
"It wasn't the most sensitive thing to do. An interview forced on a prisoner just released is a low thing to do," Drucker said.
Israeli TV anchor Yonit Levy called the interview "borderline torture"
Amin, who conducted the interview, told Israel's Channel 10 TV that she would not have forced Schalit to speak if he didn't want to, and he seemed willing to do so.
Nonetheless, "he seemed extremely tired, thin and pale, voice very faint, very difficult to concentrate. I had to repeat the questions several times," Amin told The Associated Press. She acknowledged that he was accompanied by Hamas gunmen when he arrived for the interview.
Earlier this week, major Israeli media outlets agreed not to disseminate new video or photos of the Schalits for 10 days following the release.

The problem is the corporations have not been paying 35% in taxes, because if they were the United States of America would be solvent, the are writing of 25% of that and only paying 10% under the George Bush Tax Cuts.
# 2. 9 The second 9 represents a 9% tax on investment income, like the Stock Market, or money you have invested in Banks. This would be a savings from the current 35% tax of only 9% paid by the Super Rica and the Rich who have this kind of money to invest. Or the United States companies that outsourced millions of American Jobs to other countries. They would save 26%
# 3. 9 Is a National Sales Tax of 9% that will be charged to the consumer every time he makes a purchase.
For the American Worker this 9% tax will be added to the state he or she lives in State Sale Tax which is about 9% Plus their 2% Property TAX and his 4.4% Gas Tax Plus their 25% Beer Tax which they are going to need if Herman Cain gets anywhere near Washington D.C. As far as big business they do not have to pay this National Sales tax because they have something called a Resale License which means that they are passing the tax on to the consumer who buy their product.
This leaving the National Sales Tax on the American Workers back at almost 50% of their earnings.

More than 400 police took part in the three-day operation in the region, known for its illegal gold mining.
The region has seen an influx of fortune-hunters trying to make a living from the trade.
Prosecutors say young girls are lured to the area by women who travel around offering them jobs in shops or as domestic helpers, but that the girls often end up being forced to work as prostitutes in local bars.
Last month, the charity Save the Children said that more than 1,100 underage girls were being used as sexual slaves in illegal mining camps in the south-eastern Peruvian state of Madre de Dios.
Camps set up along the main highway have also attracted unlicensed bars used for prostitution.
The gold rush is contributing to the destruction of the rain forest and contaminating the environment with tons of mercury, used in processing the precious metal.

5 arrested in Peru sex slavery raid
LIMA, Peru
(AP) — Peruvian prosecutors say five people have been arrested on suspicion of human trafficking in police raids on brothels that rescued 293 women in a jungle region rife with illegal gold-mining.
Police say the women were rescued from sexual slavery in the Amazon state of Madre de Dios. The weekend raids were on 60 houses of prostitution and involved more than 400 officers.
Local prosecutor Fernando de Santa Maria says that of the 293 women, at least were five minors, the youngest age 13.
Thousands of fortune-seekers have flooded into Madre de Dios in a gold rush that is destroying rain forest and contaminating the environment with tons of mercury, which used in processing the gold.

Sex tourism is a flourishing industry in Peru, where tourists have easy access to vulnerable children. The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child estimated that there are up to 500,000 child victims of sexual exploitation and violence in Peru. But the Peruvian government’s efforts to eradicate the sex slave trade have been stalled by corruption, insufficient law enforcement, and apathy.
“Tourism is a major economic force in Peru, and inbound tourism is increasing by 10% every year,” says Greenwald. “This means that more children will fall victim to sex slavery, unless we take action now. By joining our voices, travelers can convince Peru to protect these children.”

Washington D.C. American Corporations create millions of jobs for overseas countries and foreign workers, but American workers are not aloud to go to these other countries and work these jobs even at the low wages these foreign workers earn.

Yes the American workers wants to leave the United States of America searching for work in foreign countries and are willing make less money taking these low paying jobs, The problem is like in Costa Rica, American Corporations employ 10,s of thousands of workers but it is illegal for a American to work at an American corporation in Costa Rica, if caught working in Costa Rica at a American Corporation that American is deported on the spot he can not go back to his apartment of house to retrieve any of his belongings, computers, money or even make arrangements for his dog or car.
The reason that an American would try to go to a foreign country and work for less money is because the cost of living in these foreign countries is much lower and he can enjoy a stile of middle class living on much less money. All the American worker wants is food on the table and a roof over his head and it is getting harder and harder for the American worker to archive this in the United States with all the jobs being sent overseas and American Corporations bringing in cheaper labor and cheaper workers to take jobs away jobs from Americans. These workers are aloud to work in the United states and are not being deported like American Workers in Costa Rica and other foreign countries.
I have a sugestion for the American Government in Washington D.C. and this is to pass a law through congress Taxing every American Corporation that is sending jobs overseas to foreign countries or employing foreign workers on American soil.
Here is a tax plan to help all Americans rich and poor alike and put Americans back to work in the United States.
This is a one dollar ($1.00) per hour tax on every worker that an American Corporation pays a foreign workers overseas or foreign workers working on American soil. With these Trillions of dollars coming in from this tax the United States Government should be able to give all American Corporation employing Americans in the United States a tax break and also give all the American workers working on American soil a tax break.
Both Republicans and democrats should like this plan even the Tea Party!
