"Simon Bolívar", 1826 If the world had to choose a capital, the Isthmus of Panamá, would be the obvious place for that high destiny.
Few cities in Latin America can match  the diversity, cosmopolitanism and sheer energy of Panama City in the Republic of Panama: polyglot and post-modern before its time, in many ways it is closer in atmosphere to the mighty trading cities of Asia – Hong Kong or Singapore – than to anywhere else in the region. Situated on one of the great crossroads of the world, the NEW SILK ROUTE and the CROSS-ROADS of the AMERICAS the city has always thrived on commerce, and its unique geographical position and the opportunities it presents have attracted immigrants from all over the globe. Though it is the undisputed political and social centre of the Republic of Panamá and home to almost half its population, Panamá City's gaze is fixed firmly on the outside world, and its inhabitants pay scant attention to what they refer to rather vaguely as "the interior". Open-minded and outward looking, the population is among the sharpest and most sophisticated in Central America.

Take a Virtual Tour of Panama City

With a spectacular setting on the Pacific bay of the same name, with the canal on one side and lush, forested mountains rising behind, Panamá City encompasses some startling incongruities. On the southwest end of the bay stands the old city centre of San Felipe, a jumble of crumbling colonial churches and nineteenth-century mansions, while 4km or so to the northeast rise the shimmering skyscrapers of El Cangrejo, the modern banking and commercial district. Further east, amid the sprawling suburbs, stand the ruins of Panamá Viejo, the first European city to be founded on the Pacific coast of the Americas, while west of San Felipe the former US Canal Zone town of Balboa retains a distinctly North American character despite having been returned to Panamanian control in 1979.Those who find the city's ceaseless commercial energy overwhelming, meanwhile, can easily escape: to Isla Taboga, the idyllic "island of flowers" some 20km off the coast; along the Amador Causeway that juts out into the Pacific beside the canal; or into the Parque Nacional Metropolitano, the only pristine tropical rainforest within the limits of a Latin American capital. Panamá City is also a good base from which to explore the rest of the country – the canal, Colón and the Caribbean coast as far as Portobelo can all be visited on day-trips.

 Amador
"El Amador" is a causeway connecting several islands. It is also known as the Amador Causeway and was once a US Army Base prior to the transfer of the Panama Canal in December 1999. El Amador is situated below the Bridge of the Americas, which gives you a expansive view of the bridge, as well as the Balboa Yacht Club. During the day many vessels will pass under the bridge, either entering or departing The Panama Canal. From downtown Panama City, it is only a $3.00 fare in a taxi to reach either El Amador or the look out on the far side of the bridge. The Amador Causeway has quickly become one of Panama's most desirable tourist areas with many resturants and bars. The Causeway itself connects three small islands, Noas, Perico and Flamenco, with the mainland. It is visited by both foreigners and locals alike, the Causeway has enormous tourist potential, with several large projects having already been completed and many planned for the future. The Causeway is located at the southeastern most tip of the Panama Canal, with spectacular views of Panama City and the Bridge of the Americas. While here, visitors can observe the numerous vessels that enter or depart the Panama Canal throughout the day, passing directly beneath the Bridge of the Americas.
In the Causeway's most northern area is home to a new large international hotel, complete with pool and Fridays Restaurant, and the Balboa Yacht Club, which faces the Canal and also has a pool, a  restaurant and bar. The Balboa Yacht Club is quarters to several dozen personal pleasure boats, and has a long dock which juts out into the Panama Canal. There is plentiful space for parking here, and the area is wide-open and enjoyable. A good portion of the walk-way is made with red brick and lined with lively trees and flowers and is used by families with children, couples, joggers, skate boarders, bike-riding and people on roller blades. You may also enjoy a horse carriage ride, which runs daily along a part of the Causeway. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic along the Causeway can be overwhelming on weekends, when most of the locals visit.

Bridge of the Americas

Bridge of the Americas has an elevation of 118 meters (354 ft.) and width of 1,669 meters (5,007 ft.) and it connects the two land masses separated due to the construction of The Panama Canal. It is often referred to as the bridge to South America.  The Bridge was built by the United States, at a cost of $20 million dollars; the Bridge of the Americas now forms an integral part of the Pan American Highway, connecting both North and South America.

Prior to the construction, a ferry service was provided for approximately 30 years, and was the principal means of transportation between the eastern and western portions of the province. Even today, docks on both sides of the canal are clearly visible and serve as a reminder of what once was.

On the western side of the bridge, just after joining the highway, there is a rest stop / and look out station situated on the right side. One can get reasonably good photographs from here, however, the angle is not great, as you are looking back alongside the bridge.

Casco Viejo
In the colonial part of the city, called Casco Antiguo and is also know as San Felipe which protrudes into the sea on the southwestern side of the city. It's an area of restored colonial majesty, remarkable architecture. Some attractions include the Plaza de Bolivar, the presidential palace, a 17th-century Metropolitan Church, the Inter-Oceanic Canal Museum of Panama and the History Museum of Panama. The sea wall in this area was built by the Spaniards four centuries ago. Via Espana is the main-drag in the Cangrejo district and is the financial center along and is the complete opposite to this yesteryear charm, with tall modern buildings and sophisticated commercial businesses.

centenial_bridge
Centennial Bridge
The new bridge was designed by a joint venture between TY Lin International and the Louis Berger Group Inc.  The second crossing of the Panama Canal is located 15km north of the Puente de las Americas, close to the Pedro Miguel locks and Paraiso community and 22km from Panama City. The bridge, along with new freeway sections connecting Araijan in the west to Cerro Patacon in the east, is expected to remove 50% of the traffic from the old bridge.

Churches
85 percent of Panamanians are Catholic and there are many churches and cathedrals to visit.

Muilticentro Mall
Mulitcentro is ultra-modern mall with superb architecture that rivals any mall in the world and is a shopper‚s paradise with many restaurants (Hard Rock Café) and amenities like a movie theater, the Majestic Casino and many shops and four levels of shops

Panama Viejo

Founded in 1519 by the conquistador Pedrarías Dávila, Panamá Viejo is the oldest European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas. Within a few years of its founding, the city became a launching point for the exploration and conquest of Peru and a transit point for gold and silver headed back to Spain through the Isthmus. In 1671 Henry Morgan with a band of 1400 men attacked and looted the city, which was subsequently destroyed by fire. The ruins of the old city still remain and are a popular tourist attraction known as Panamá la Vieja (Old Panama).
